French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has signed off on a €149 million grant to support Lhyfe’s green hydrogen production facility near the Grand Canal of Le Havre, a major industrial port in Europe. The initiative, selected in 2022 by the European Commission under the third wave of Important Projects of Common European Interest for hydrogen, received formal approval from the French government in March 2024.

Lhyfe will receive an initial €18 million by June 2025 to cover prior investments since 2022 and to begin subsequent phases. Further payments, structured as reimbursements for verified expenses, will follow over four years, contingent on meeting annual milestones, up to the total grant amount. The Green Horizon project aims to produce up to 34 tonnes of green hydrogen daily through water electrolysis, with completion expected by 2029. This facility will be among France and Europe’s first large-scale decarbonized hydrogen production sites.

Located near Yara’s plant in Le Havre, the project aligns with Yara’s decarbonization goals, which include adopting green hydrogen. Yara has expressed support for Lhyfe’s efforts. Lhyfe has secured grid connection, power availability, and submitted building and environmental permits for the site. The company, operational since 2021, already supplies green hydrogen using a fleet of nearly 70 containers. For this project, hydrogen will primarily be delivered via pipeline directly to industrial customers.

Matthieu Guesné, Founder and CEO of Lhyfe, stated: “We are proud to receive this grant, which reflects a strong vote of confidence from the French government and the European Commission in a SME that is capable of innovating, meeting complex technological challenges and rapidly turning its ambitions into reality. It also recognizes our ability to invest heavily and rally renowned international partners to our side.”

He added: “By contributing to the decarbonization of Le Havre industrial-port area starting in 2029, the Green Horizon project marks a real turning point – one that is essential if we are to decarbonise our industrial uses on a large scale. With this project Lhyfe will surpass the 100 MW milestone in installed electrolysis capacity: a true industrial leap forward!”

Separately, Lhyfe signed an agreement with French company INOCEL to supply up to 140 tonnes of green hydrogen over four years for testing fuel cells, advancing sustainable energy solutions for stationary and mobility applications. Additionally, Lhyfe and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) signed a memorandum of understanding to explore co-development of large-scale green hydrogen projects in Europe, focusing on collaboration across the hydrogen value chain.
