On April 18, 2025, Stellantis, a global automotive leader, and Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, unveiled plans to launch a localized electric vehicle (EV) assembly project in Malaysia. This collaboration represents a key step in their partnership, aimed at enhancing sustainable transportation options in Southeast Asia.

The project will utilize Stellantis’ established manufacturing facility in Gurun, Kedah, with an initial investment of €5 million (approximately 24 million Malaysian ringgit). The first model to be assembled locally, Leapmotor’s C10, is set to begin production by the end of 2025. This initiative will leverage the plant’s strategic location and advanced production capabilities to serve Malaysia and neighboring ASEAN markets.

The partnership seeks to introduce Leapmotor’s innovative and competitively priced EVs to the region, diversifying Stellantis’ offerings while supporting Southeast Asia’s shift toward greener mobility. The Gurun plant, a vital hub for Stellantis, is well-positioned to scale production and facilitate efficient distribution across the ASEAN region, aligning with the company’s regional manufacturing and sales strategy.

Ashwani Muppasani, Chief Operating Officer of Stellantis India & Asia Pacific, highlighted the significance of the project: “This regional milestone not only marks the beginning of Leapmotor’s localized production, but also opens a new chapter in our electrification journey across ASEAN. By combining Leapmotor’s innovation and competitive products with Stellantis’ regional expertise and global scale, we are laying the foundation for sustainable mobility in Malaysia and beyond.”

Zhu Jiangming, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Leapmotor, expressed optimism about the collaboration’s impact: “We look forward to working closely with Stellantis to bring new technology and vitality to Malaysia’s automotive transformation, and to establish a model for Leapmotor’s broader entry into the Southeast Asian market.”

This joint effort underscores both companies’ commitment to advancing automotive innovation and sustainability, positioning Malaysia as a key player in the region’s evolving EV landscape.
