Australia’s Largest Electric Bus Depot Officially Open

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has unveiled the nation’s largest electric bus depot at Woden, marking a significant milestone in sustainable public transport. The facility, now open, is set to begin full operations by the end of April 2025, supporting the ACT Government’s ambition to achieve a zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040.

The Woden depot is equipped to house up to 100 electric buses and features advanced charging infrastructure, with provisions for future solar panel integration. It includes 12 service bays, a workshop, and modern amenities for approximately 250 Transport Canberra employees. A government spokesperson stated: “This depot is a vital step toward cleaner, more efficient public transport, ensuring better services for our community.”

The new facility is designed to enhance the reliability and efficiency of bus services across the ACT. With its opening, the region anticipates improved connectivity, particularly through the introduction of more frequent rapid bus routes. Starting Monday, April 28, 2025, a revised bus timetable will add 94 extra weekday services, offering greater convenience for commuters.

The depot’s advanced infrastructure supports the growing fleet of electric buses, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to a more sustainable transport network. The inclusion of future-ready features, such as potential solar charging, underscores the ACT’s commitment to long-term environmental goals. Transport Canberra staff will benefit from a modern workspace, enabling them to maintain and operate the electric fleet effectively.

This development aligns with broader efforts to make public transport in the ACT more eco-friendly and accessible. The Woden depot’s capacity and technology position it as a cornerstone of the territory’s zero-emissions strategy, setting a benchmark for other regions. By prioritizing electric buses, the ACT aims to deliver cleaner air and more reliable services, benefiting both residents and the environment.

The opening of the depot reflects years of planning and investment in green infrastructure. As full operations commence, the ACT Government expects the facility to play a pivotal role in transforming public transport, supporting the territory’s vision for a sustainable future by 2040.
