EVREC’s Newfoundland Green Hydrogen Project Gains EIS Guidelines

17 Apr 2025  by power-technology
The green energy hub project in Botwood, Newfoundland and Labrador, has advanced with the release of environmental impact statement (EIS) guidelines by the province’s Department of Environment and Climate Change. This milestone supports the project’s goal of producing sustainable hydrogen through renewable energy sources.

The project will include up to three gigawatts of onshore wind capacity, with energy and molecular storage.

Led by Abraxas Power and its subsidiary, Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC), the initiative aims to transform energy production in the region. It is expected to bolster Newfoundland and Labrador’s shift toward green energy, drive economic growth, and establish the province as a significant contributor to the global hydrogen market. EVREC has secured access to over 300 km² of Crown lands for the project’s development.

The project includes up to three gigawatts of onshore wind power, complemented by energy and molecular storage systems to enable the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia behind the meter. Annually, it is projected to produce 180,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 1 million tonnes of green ammonia, supporting sustainable energy solutions.

Abraxas Power chief operating officer Dean Comand stated: “The EIS is an essential part of our approach, and we are eager to maintain open, ongoing engagement with stakeholders and regulators while continuing to work on refining and advancing all aspects of the project. Newfoundland and Labrador is on the cutting edge of clean energy innovation, and this project represents an exciting opportunity for the province to contribute to global sustainability efforts. The EIS is an important step in the process and underscores our commitment to responsible development and to working alongside communities and stakeholders to ensure that the environmental impact is carefully considered at every stage of this transformative project.”

To facilitate exports, EVREC plans to develop dedicated port infrastructure for global market distribution. Pre-construction efforts are well underway, including engineering, wind resource assessments, and environmental studies. These activities involve collecting environmental data and engaging with the public and stakeholders, with the final project design shaped by ongoing evaluations.

This initiative reflects a commitment to sustainable development and positions Newfoundland and Labrador as a leader in renewable energy innovation, with careful consideration of environmental and community impacts throughout the project’s progression.
