Japan’s NEDO Opens Fiscal 2025 Funding Round for Solar Tech Innovation

20 Apr 2025  by pv magazine
Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has opened a call for proposals under its fiscal 2025 solar technology development program. Announced recently, the initiative, named the “Technology Development Project for the Expansion of Solar Power Introduction,” will span from fiscal 2025 to 2029, aligning with Japan’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

NEDO is inviting projects that enhance solar cell efficiency, optimize system installation, improve recycling processes, and ensure long-term power stability. The program focuses on next-generation solar cells, such as perovskite and multi-junction cells, which offer greater efficiency than existing technologies. It also supports systems tailored for diverse installation sites and advances in recycling, particularly for perovskite solar modules.

Submissions are open to companies, universities, local governments, and research teams until May 21. Proposals must be submitted through a designated online form and registered via Japan’s Cross-Ministerial Research and Development Management System (e-Rad). NEDO emphasized that submissions via mail, email, or other offline methods will not be accepted.

The program targets six key research areas to advance solar technology. It prioritizes the development of high-efficiency solar cells and photovoltaic (PV) systems designed for specific environments to broaden solar deployment. Additionally, NEDO seeks to enhance long-term operational reliability through smart maintenance tools, efficient operational methods, and advanced irradiance forecasting. Recycling efforts will focus on improving material separation and recovery for various PV modules.

NEDO’s program also emphasizes foundational research, including new evaluation methods for solar cell performance and reliability. It will conduct trend analysis through domestic case studies and international partnerships, notably with the International Energy Agency’s Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (PVPS), to monitor global solar technology and market developments.

To provide guidance, NEDO will host two online briefings: one on subsidy projects on April 22, 2025, and another on commissioned projects on April 24, 2025. While attendance is not mandatory, NEDO strongly recommends participation. The agency noted that e-Rad registration may take over two weeks, urging applicants to plan accordingly.

This initiative reflects Japan’s commitment to advancing solar technology to support sustainable energy goals. By fostering innovation in solar cell development, system optimization, and recycling, NEDO aims to strengthen Japan’s renewable energy infrastructure and contribute to global efforts toward carbon neutrality.
