Canadian Project to Develop Marine-Based Nuclear Reactors Moves Ahead

Canada’s Prodigy Clean Energy is teaming up with Westinghouse Electric Company to develop nuclear power plants that can be used both at sea and on land.

The two companies are designing transportable nuclear power plants featuring an eVinci microreactor from Westinghouse.

According to the pair of North American companies, marine-based nuclear reactors can be beneficial to power offshore oil and gas platforms, commercial seaports, deep sea mining operations and desalination.

Describing the technology as “game-changing” a spokesperson for Prodigy told Splash a first project will focus on readiness for operation in Canada by 2030.

Many nuclear shipping projects are underway across the world. Floating nuclear power plant projects are underway in the US, China, Denmark, Russia, Italy and South Korea.

China’s Jiangnan Shipyard recently unveiled a design for a 24,000 teu boxship incorporating molten salt reactor technology.

Last month, Eyal Ofer’s Zodiac Maritime has partnered with classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) and South Korea’s HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and KEPCO E&C to develop nuclear-propelled ship designs.

A recent survey carried by the International Chamber of Shipping showed 9% of its C-suite members expect nuclear-powered ships within a decade.
