La Poste Group said its real-estate arm and French utility EDF group will form a joint venture aimed at improving energy efficiency.

The French postal service company said late Tuesday it plans to invest 400 million euros ($431.8 million) to reduce its energy consumption by 20% and accelerate the decarbonization of its real-estate assets by 35% until 2030.

The deal with the multinational electric utility company will involve the deployment of energy performance control systems to nearly 1,300 sites, renovation of energy systems on nearly 500 sites and the installation of solar power plants on 250 sites, La Poste said.

The joint venture, 66% owned by La Poste Immobilier and 34% by EDF Group, is aimed at creating synergies in expertise and experience in energy transition, it said.

La Poste's real estate assets represent an annual energy consumption of 990 Gigawatt hours, equivalent to the consumption of a town of 300,000 inhabitants, the company said. It is held by the French government and the French financial institution, Caisse des Depots et Consignations.
