Bila Solar, a solar module manufacturer based in Singapore, announced plans to invest upwards of $35 million in a new module manufacturing facility in Indianapolis, marking its entrance into the U.S. market.

The 150,000 sq. ft. facility is located in an existing building formerly occupied by Eli Lilly. Indianapolis will also be the home of Bila Solar’s U.S. headquarters, the company said.

Bila Solar said the facility will have an annual production capacity of 1 GW once fully operational. The company aims to begin production in the summer of 2024. The facility is expected to create around 250 jobs.

Bila Solar manufactures what it calls “ultra-lightweight” solar modules free of glass and frames. The modules weigh 70% less than traditional glass modules, and are 95% slimmer, the company claims. The modules can be used in applications such as low load-bearing commercial and industrial roofs, waterproof membrane roofs, integration into vehicles, off-grid energy utilization, and curved sources, they said.

Bila Solar currently operates a 1 GW manufacturing facility in Asia.
