India Green Hydrogen India's Vision of Green: The Rise of Defined Green Hydrogen

22 Aug 2023  by energynews

In a stride towards realizing its National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Indian government has taken a leap by officially announcing the Green Hydrogen Standard for the nation. This move, spearheaded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), outlines specific emission thresholds that hydrogen produced from renewable sources must meet to be classified as ‘Green’.

The standard’s scope encompasses both electrolysis-based and biomass-based hydrogen production methods, reflecting a comprehensive approach to sustainable hydrogen generation.

After thorough consultations with various stakeholders, the MNRE has defined Green Hydrogen as hydrogen with well-to-gate emissions, which encompass water treatment, electrolysis, gas purification, drying, and hydrogen compression. These emissions must not exceed two kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent for every kilogram of hydrogen produced (2 kg CO2 equivalent/kg H2).

The notification further emphasizes that a detailed methodology for measurement, reporting, monitoring, on-site verification, and certification of green hydrogen and its derivatives will be meticulously specified by the Ministry.

In a strategic move, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, under the Ministry of Power, has been designated as the nodal authority responsible for accrediting agencies that oversee the monitoring, verification, and certification of Green Hydrogen production projects.

This long-awaited announcement of the Green Hydrogen Standard heralds a new era of clarity and direction for India’s Green Hydrogen community. The standard’s establishment not only aligns with India’s ambitious renewable energy goals but also positions the country as a pioneering force globally.

With this step, India proudly joins the ranks of a select few nations across the world that have formally defined the concept of Green Hydrogen. As the world looks towards sustainable energy alternatives, India’s proactive move marks a remarkable stride towards a greener, more resilient future.
