The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has published a tender for consultancy services to do a feasibility study for steamfield development in the Paka Geothermal Field in the Baringo-Silali Geothermal Project, Kenya. The tender is currently in the prequalification stage.

Additional details can be found in the official tender document. Applications must be submitted by 11 May 2023 at 15:00 CET.

The Government of Kenya has received a loan from KfW Development Bank towards the cost of geothermal steam field development at the Baringo-Silali Geothermal Block. Baringo Silali Geothermal Block has three geothermal prospects/fields namely Paka, Korosi, and Silali, and will be developed in phases. One of the components to be financed under the loan includes the procurement of Consultancy Services for a Feasibility Study of the Project.

The tasks of the Consultant of this assignment are comprehensive and include the preparation of a reservoir capacity and a field utilization assessment, preparation of a transmission Line evacuation study, assessment of the financial and economic feasibility of the project, preparation of an environmental and social impact assessment scoping report for the steam gathering system and the power plant, and the transfer of knowledge and provision of training for GDC’s staff.

The overall duration of the assignment is estimated to be six months and is expected to start in mid-2023.

The prequalification of experienced consultants for the requested services will be guided by the latest version of the “Guidelines for the Procurement of Consulting Services, Works, Plant, Goods and Non-Consulting Services in Financial Cooperation with Partner Countries.” It is foreseen to assign the services to an independent consultant firm or association of firms with proven experience in the respective fields of activity and in the regional context.

Several wells have been drilled in the Paka Geothermal Field, as we have reported on extensively. In 2021, exploratory well PW-03 was confirmed to have an output of 17 MW. The start of production drilling in Paka was announced in early 2022.
