Nevada Approves First-Of-Its-Kind Geothermal Power Supply Agreement

The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has approved the Clean Transition Tariff (CTT), a novel rate structure agreed upon in 2024 by Google, NV Energy, and geothermal developer Fervo Energy. This innovative tariff enables large energy consumers to invest in clean, reliable energy and emerging technologies by paying a premium, offering a scalable model for other states and companies.

Under the CTT, Fervo Energy and NV Energy will supply Google’s data centers with 115 MW of geothermal energy produced through Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). Rather than passing development costs to consumers, the tariff allows Google to fund Fervo’s project directly, supporting long-term investment in sustainable energy. Dawn Owens, Vice President for Development and Commercial Markets at Fervo Energy, stated: “Our partnership with Google has prompted interest from other companies interested in firm and clean power.”

The approval of the CTT establishes a replicable framework for large customers and utilities to adopt clean energy solutions. Fervo Energy noted that the regulatory process has attracted attention from other companies, prompting plans to expand the project’s scale to meet growing demand. The initiative reflects a commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure while maintaining cost efficiency for stakeholders.

This collaboration in Nevada supports the integration of geothermal energy into large-scale operations, contributing to sustainable energy goals and fostering innovation in the energy sector.
