Nikola and Chart to Partner on Liquid Hydrogen Technologies

Nikola Corporation and Chart Industries have signed a strategic agreement to collaborate on hydrogen technologies and equipment.

The two companies will ensure the development and supply of new mobile and modular hydrogen refuelling storage stations for deployment, includes liquid hydrogen storage tanks, transport trailers, and accelerate hydrogen infrastructure technology and on-board fuel systems.

Nikola also signed purchase orders with Chart for the delivery of its liquid hydrogen storage tanks, refuelling stations and liquid hydrogen transport trailers, to support customers of its Tre hydrogen electric vehicles.

Michael Lohscheller, Nikola President and CEO, said, “We know our customers are interested in transitioning to hydrogen quickly and seamlessly. Solutions like Chart’s hydrogen transport trailers will play an important part in jump starting a hydrogen ecosystem.”

Chart claims its transportable fuel acts as an ideal solution for smaller fleets or immediate and interim fuelling needs, and the liquid hydrogen storage and liquid high pressure dispense pump can lower station operating costs.

Nikola’s purchase will also include Chart’s most recent liquid hydrogen transport trailer design, which is a new lightweight option designed to be pulled by hydrogen electric vehicles.

The company recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GenH2 to jointly market and distribute small-scale hydrogen liquefaction technologies globally.

Earlier this year, Nikola unveiled its hydrogen mobile refueller HYLA, which will encompass the company’s energy products for producing, distributing and dispensing hydrogen to its fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).

It is capable of cooling and compressing hydrogen to rapidly fill 700 bar FCEV heavy trucks and is couple with a hydrogen tube trailer with a capacity of 960kg, allowing back-to-back refuelling for customers.
