Preparations Underway for 7-Km Geothermal Well in Podhale, Poland

Preparations for the drilling of the planned geothermal well in the village of Szaflary in Podhale, Poland are about to be completed with drilling expected to start by March 2023. This will potentially drill the world’s deepest geothermal well with a planned depth of 7 kilometers.

We had first reported on the initial plans for this project back in 2019. Back then, the project will still in the investment stage. Although there were some delays because of the soft ground encountered in the drill site, infrastructure preparations are now almost completed. The well is to be completed in 2024 and will supply heating network of Szaflary and its vicinity.

The well aims to access the Podhale Basin, considered one of the most promising formations for hosting geothermal energy in Poland. Previous data has shown that hot water can already be extracted from this formation at a depth of 3000 to 4000 meters.

The planned geothermal well in Szaflary is an investment worth over PLN 100 million (approx. USD 22.4 million). Comprehensive financing for this project has been provided by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
