After two months, drilling of the first well for the geothermal project in Potsdam, Germany is close to completion. Data from the well will be analyzed before utility company Energie und Wasser Potsdam (EWP) proceeds with the drilling of the second well, planned on March 2023.

Drilling of the first well in Heinrich-Mann-Allee started two weeks before the end of 2022. EWP Managing Director Eckard Veil reported that the well has been drilled to a total depth of 2157 meters. These results were announced during an inspection meeting attended by Minister of Economics Jörg Steinbach and interested citizens.

Through the project, EWP plans to help the city of Potsdam achieve its target of 95% carbon emission reduction by 2025. Starting late 2020, EWP in collaboration with the Potsdam Geo Research Center conducted seismic surveys to characterize the region’s subsurface geology and potential for hosting a geothermal resource. EWP expects that the two boreholes can supply the city’s district heating needs for around 50 years.

According to EWP, the company is investing around EUR 20 million for the project are taking “all the risk,” as they are the first in the region to drill for geothermal. During the inspection meeting, second Managing Director Christiane Preuß reiterated that the company was not alone in this venture: “We know that the city of Potsdam and the state of Brandenburg are on our side.”
