Chinese EV Battery Manufacturers Refining Technology

23 Mar 2021  by Michael Herh

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturers are refining their technologies with patents on EV battery cooling. For instance, BYD recently disclosed its patent CN112455287A on EV and EV battery cooling.

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturers are refining their technologies to enhance their competitiveness in the global market.

“This patent is to prevent overheating by collecting data such as driving conditions and the current driving mode and temperature,” the company explained, adding, “With this technique, fires attributable to thermal runaway can be forestalled and the discharge capacity of the battery can be maintained at an optimal level.”

Chinese EV battery manufacturers have gone through not a few fire accidents for about 10 years and this is why they are focusing on techniques such as battery cooling. CATL is increasing the ratio of LFP batteries, which are lower in energy density but safer than Li-ion batteries, and accelerating its development of high-nickel batteries at the same time.

In addition, Chinese companies are beefing up the EV battery value chain ecosystem. CATL recently formed a partnership with State Power Investment Corp. of China to expand its energy storage system business. At present, more than 1.75 million EV chargers are available in China and Chinese automakers are also working on future car value chains by asking the Chinese government to play a role in data accumulation for autonomous driving.
