New Jersey To Get Its First Biosolids Gasification Plant

19 Jul 2019  by Hydrogen Fuel News

Aries Clean Energy has received all approvals to build a biosolids-only gasification facility.

The biosolids gasification plant will be built in New Jersey by Aries Clean Energy and will be the first in the state to generate clean renewable energy from only biosolids, which are organic matter recycled from sewage.

The facility is expected to bring environmental and sustainable benefits to the area.

The biosolids gasification plant will help to make the region more environmentally-friendly and sustainable by processing 400 tons of biosolids per day into green renewable power. The Aries Linden Biosolids Gasification Facility will be constructed in a repurposed building within the Linden Roselle Sewerage Authority (LRSA) complex, which is located about 20 miles from Manhattan.

Aries Clean Energy is a Tennessee-based renewable energy company that specializes in the development of downdraft and fluidized bed gasification projects that allow for the clean conversion of waste into energy.

The company will deploy its patented fluidized bed gasification system that has been designed to specifically process biosolids. The system will lower the volume of biosolids from 400 tons daily to 22 tons of beneficial biochar.

This resulting biochar will be used as a substitute for fly ash in concrete. Meanwhile, the renewable energy that is produced from the system is recovered and utilized within the system to ensure that no fossil fuels are used during normal operations.

Additionally, it will lower greenhouse gasses due to the decrease in trucking miles associated with conventional disposal methods and the elimination of methane produced from land application of biosolids.

Aries’ biosolids gasification plant is also a world-first.

“With these approvals, this marks the first large-scale fluidized bed gasification system to process biosolids in the world,” said CEO of Aries Clean Energy, Gregory Bafalis, Canadian Biomass reports.

“Aries patented gasification system eliminates the need for environmentally harmful landfilling or incineration of biosolids, while producing beneficial renewable energy and biochar.”

Bafalis added that the company believes the biosolids gasification plant will revolutionize the wastewater treatment industry and become the best available control technology for disposing biosolids.

“Aries patented technologies will bring clean and renewable solutions not only to the Garden State, but worldwide,” Bafalis stated.
