Enugu targets 660MW coal-fired power plant, sets July groundbreaking date

07 May 2026

The Enugu State Government announced plans to construct a 660MW coal-fired power plant, with construction to start in July.

Mbah, speaking on 6 May, stated that under his administration, Enugu became the first subnational entity to establish an electricity market following constitutional and Electricity Act amendments. These changes allowed state participation in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.

Mbah said that they had moved beyond establishing the electricity market to local electricity production. Groundbreaking for the 660MW coal-fired power plant would occur in July, with a 24-month construction period and a target to commission the plant 24 months after groundbreaking. After 2027, Enugu would have no power outages for businesses or residences, and electricity would be the most affordable in the country.

He mentioned that Enugu coal had low sulfur content (less than 0.5%) and high calorific value (about 7,000 kilocalories per kilogram), ranking among the best globally, with only Japan comparable. He said they would add value to the coal by generating electricity instead of just exporting it.
