Rosatom Ensures Readiness of Control Systems for Start-Up Operations at Tianwan NPP Unit 7 in China

23 Apr 2026  by Rosatom

Specialized Scientific Research Institute for Instrumentation Engineering JSC (SNIIP JSC, a company of the Instrumentation & Control and Electrical Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation) supplied the reactor island instrumentation and control systems for Tianwan NPP Unit 7 in Jiangsu province, China, by the Yellow sea.

As part of the Russian scope, the company's specialists produced, installed and commissioned the systems providing monitoring and diagnostics of key parameters of the reactor plant, fire protection, reactor control and protection, as well as laboratory equipment and parts of the full-scope simulator.

"We supply standard packages of instrumentation and control equipment for the power units under construction in China, with equal scope for all four facilities. Mainly, this is the equipment of the nuclear island, which performs the most important functions: monitors the operating parameters of the VVER-1200 reactor, measures the neutron flux, hydrogen concentration, and coolant level. Now the systems are ready for further fuel loading operations," said Alexey Nikitin, Chief Executive Officer of SNIIP JSC.

For information:

Tianwan NPP is the largest project in the economic cooperation between Russia and China. Currently, two power units of the Russian design with VVER-1200 reactor plants are under construction. The previously built four power units of the Russian Design with VVER-1000 reactors are operating successfully and generate millions of kilowatts of electricity. In June 2018, the Intergovernmental Protocol and framework contract for the construction of Units 7 and 8 with VVER-1200 reactors were signed in Beijing. On the Russian side, the contract was signed by the Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation, the Chinese side was represented by enterprises of CNNC corporation. In accordance with these documents, the Russian side is responsible for the design of the nuclear island of the NPP and supply of key nuclear island equipment for both Units. In addition, the following execution contracts were signed: basic design contract for Units 7 and 8; general contract for Units 7 and 8. In accordance with the signed contracts, the Engineering Division of Rosatom performs the design works and supplies documentation and equipment for the nuclear island, and renders the related services (designer supervision, installation supervision, commissioning supervision). Construction of Units 7 and 8 started in May 2021.

Specialized Scientific Research Institute for Instrumentation Engineering JSC (SNIIP JSC) is a company of the Instrumentation & Control and Electrical Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation.
