Brazilian steel producer Gerdau SA and renewable power producer and trader Newave Energia SA have inaugurated a 452-MWp solar complex in the state of Goias.

The Barro Alto Solar Complex was built at a total cost of BRL 1.3 billion (USD 249.2m/EUR 215m), the steel producer said on Thursday.

The new renewable energy complex features 731,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels, covering an area of 800 hectares (1,976.84 acres). Newave Energia is also acting as the retail energy trader for the PV complex.

Part of Barro Alto's output will be supplied to the free market through contracts with corporate customers. Another portion will be used for self-generation, supplying Gerdau industrial facilities.

At present, Newave Energia has 884 MWp in two solar power projects in its portfolio, Barro Alto and Arinos in Minas Gerais state, Gerdau noted.
