South Korea Announces Increase in Nuclear Power Capacity Utilization to Address Energy Supply Challenges

17 Mar 2026
The ruling Democratic Party of Korea announced on Monday that it will increase the utilization rate of nuclear power capacity to address current energy supply challenges. According to the plan, the capacity utilization rate of South Korea's nuclear power plants will be raised from the current slightly below 70% to 80%. This target is expected to be achieved by the end of May this year through the early completion of maintenance work at six nuclear power plants.

Democratic Party lawmakers stated at a press conference that the increase in nuclear power capacity will be achieved by adjusting the operation and maintenance schedules of existing plants. Against the backdrop of pressure on energy supply, increasing nuclear power generation is considered one of the effective measures to ensure stable national energy supply.

Currently, relevant departments in South Korea are advancing related work to ensure the safe and efficient operation of nuclear power plants. As a stable baseload energy source, nuclear power will play a more important role in addressing uncertainties in energy supply.
