Eco Stor Breaks Ground on Germany’s Largest Battery Storage Project

06 Nov 2025  by pv-magazine
Germany’s largest battery storage facility under construction has changed hands, with Eco Stor’s 300 MW / 714 MWh project in Förderstedt, Saxony-Anhalt, now holding the top position. The announcement came following a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, surpassing RWE’s 400 MW / 700 MWh project in terms of storage capacity.

The Förderstedt facility, once completed, will provide 714 MWh of storage, supporting grid stability and enabling greater integration of renewable energy sources in the region. Eco Stor highlighted that the project reflects the growing importance of large-scale battery systems in Germany’s energy transition, helping to balance supply and demand while improving the flexibility of the electricity grid.

The groundbreaking ceremony in Saxony-Anhalt was attended by senior representatives from politics and industry, demonstrating broad support for the initiative. State Energy Minister Armin Willingmann was present, emphasizing the significance of the project for regional energy security and renewable integration. Urban Windelen, Federal Managing Director of the Federal Association of Energy Storage Systems (BVES), also attended, noting the increasing role of battery storage in Germany’s energy system.

Bernd Schneider, representing grid operator 50Hertz, highlighted the technical benefits of large-scale battery facilities, including fast response times and the ability to provide ancillary services to the electricity network. René Zok, Mayor of Staßfurt, welcomed the project’s potential economic benefits, including job creation and local investment opportunities. Georg Gallmetzer, Managing Director of Eco Stor, described the facility as a “key milestone for energy storage in Germany,” emphasizing the company’s commitment to advancing grid-scale battery technology.

The Förderstedt battery storage project will help Germany manage fluctuations from renewable energy generation, particularly wind and solar, by storing excess electricity during periods of high production and releasing it when demand rises. The facility is part of a broader trend in Europe to increase grid resilience and support the transition toward low-carbon energy systems.

Eco Stor’s project demonstrates the technical and economic viability of large-scale battery storage. Once operational, it will not only support local grid stability but also serve as a benchmark for future developments in Germany and the wider European market. The facility’s construction and operation are expected to generate local employment and strengthen the regional supply chain for energy storage solutions.

By surpassing RWE’s previously leading project, Eco Stor confirms Germany’s ambition to expand energy storage capacity rapidly and integrate modern battery technologies into its energy infrastructure. The Förderstedt project exemplifies how grid-scale storage can enhance renewable energy utilization while supporting economic growth in local communities.
