Taiwan’s Record-Breaking Danjiang Bridge Set for May Opening

25 Oct 2025  by globalconstructionreview
The final steel deck segment has been installed on the Danjiang Bridge, marking a key milestone for the first structure to connect the east and west banks at the mouth of the Tamsui River, just north of Taipei, Taiwan. This achievement confirms the bridge’s opening on May 12, 2026, when it will be the world’s longest single-tower, asymmetric cable-stayed bridge, featuring a 450-meter central span and a 200-meter-tall concrete mast.

Zaha Hadid Architects chose a single-mast design to support the span in high winds and earthquakes without completely spoiling the sunset

The $405 million project, spanning 68 months, is led by a joint venture between Taiwan’s Sinotech Engineering Consultants and Germany’s Leonhardt, Andrä & Partner, with the design by UK-based Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA). The bridge will reduce traffic congestion by 30% on the Guandu Bridge, the only other Tamsui River crossing, located 5 kilometers upriver near Taipei. By linking coastal expressways directly, it eliminates a 10-kilometer inland detour, enhancing travel efficiency.

To preserve the Tamsui River estuary’s appeal, a popular spot for sunset viewing, ZHA chose a single-mast design to ensure stability in high winds and earthquakes while minimizing visual impact. Using 3D mapping and modeling, the bridge was positioned to allow vessels to pass beneath its elevated deck.

The Danjiang Bridge includes dedicated lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, supporting sustainable transport. It is also designed to accommodate potential future expansion of the Danhai Light Rail network. With the deck in place, crews will now pave the surface, install lighting, and add noise barriers. Structural load tests will ensure safety before the opening.

“This bridge is a testament to innovative engineering and thoughtful design,” said a ZHA spokesperson. “It balances functionality with respect for the natural beauty of the Tamsui River, ensuring both practical benefits and aesthetic harmony.”

The project enhances infrastructure while addressing community and environmental needs. By easing traffic, promoting cycling and walking, and preserving the estuary’s scenic value, the Danjiang Bridge will serve as a vital connection for Taipei’s coastal region. It stands as a model of blending advanced engineering with respect for natural surroundings, benefiting residents and visitors alike.
