Denmark-based shipping and logistics company A.P. Moller – Maersk and Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance decarbonization efforts across global supply chains. The agreement was signed on October 9 in Hong Kong, marking a new stage in the collaboration between the two companies.

The MoU builds on a five-year partnership during which Maersk and CATL cooperated in areas such as ocean transportation, intermodal logistics, and other supply chain solutions. CATL, one of the world’s largest battery manufacturers, focuses on developing advanced energy storage technologies for electric vehicles and renewable systems.

Under the new agreement, Maersk will serve as CATL’s global logistics partner, providing integrated services that include ocean freight, air freight, project logistics, and warehousing. Both companies will explore “effective and scalable” models for different markets to enhance supply chain stability and improve logistics efficiency.

In addition, Maersk and CATL will cooperate on projects promoting the electrification of container shipping and the port ecosystem. These efforts will be supported by advancements in electric system engineering, energy management, and end-of-life battery recycling systems. Officials from Maersk stated that the collaboration is intended to combine the expertise of both companies to accelerate the deployment of sustainable technologies across global transport networks.

The partnership is also expected to support Maersk’s own decarbonization strategy, which targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across all business operations by 2040. The company aims to strengthen its environmental performance through innovative technology and improved energy efficiency throughout its operations.

A.P. Moller – Maersk, headquartered in Copenhagen, currently operates a fleet of more than 700 vessels. The company has adopted a comprehensive approach toward achieving carbon neutrality, focusing on clean fuels, electrification, and advanced energy systems to reduce emissions from shipping operations.

Earlier this month, Maersk announced an efficiency program for its time-chartered fleet to retrofit approximately 200 vessels. The initiative, developed in cooperation with around 50 shipowners, seeks to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its maritime operations.

Through the collaboration with CATL, Maersk expects to expand the use of low-carbon technologies in global logistics while supporting the development of resilient, clean, and efficient supply chains. CATL’s expertise in battery innovation and energy storage solutions will play a key role in helping Maersk integrate electric systems into maritime and port operations.

Both companies emphasized that the partnership represents a strategic step forward in combining shipping and energy technologies to facilitate the global energy transition. The joint effort highlights the importance of collaboration between logistics and technology sectors in building a more sustainable and efficient transport ecosystem.
