Fuel Cell Systems Partners With Hyhaul to Deliver UK’s First Hydrogen Freight Corridor on M4

10 Aug 2025  by fuelcellsworks.
Fuel Cell Systems Limited (FCSL) has been named the hydrogen refueling infrastructure partner for the HyHAUL consortium, which is developing the UK’s first hydrogen freight corridor along the M4. Supported by the Department for Transport’s £200 million ($266 million) Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) program, the initiative will deploy 30 hydrogen-powered heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) by 2026, with plans to expand to 300 by 2030.

FCSL will install its HyFleet refueling systems, designed and manufactured in West Berkshire, at sites in Reading and Avonmouth. These systems provide high-capacity hydrogen storage, compression, and dispensing tailored for heavy-duty logistics. Dr. Lee Juby, CEO of FCSL, stated: “This project is about turning hydrogen freight from theory into practice, and our HyFleet systems are designed precisely for that purpose.” The HyFleet platform builds on FCSL’s HyQube technology, which has supported hydrogen trials and small fleet operations across the UK and Europe since 2019.

The HyHAUL project will source green hydrogen from Protium’s production facilities in Wales, including the Pioneer 1 plant, which currently produces 40 kg of hydrogen per day. Jon Perry, HyHAUL Mobility senior commercial manager, emphasized the project’s significance: “HyHAUL is about proving that hydrogen logistics can work at scale. With the right partners and technology in place, we’re creating a practical and reliable hydrogen freight corridor that will help the industry move toward net zero.”

The consortium includes partners such as NRG Riverside, ReFuels’ CNG Fuels, Scania, Reynolds Logistics, and Electra Commercial Vehicles. The project aims to reduce emissions from HGVs, which contribute 17% of the UK’s domestic transport CO₂ output. In its initial phase, HyHAUL is expected to save 1,900 tonnes of CO₂ annually, providing a model for scalable hydrogen freight refueling infrastructure across the UK.

By integrating advanced refueling systems and green hydrogen production, HyHAUL seeks to establish a sustainable framework for heavy-duty transport, supporting the UK’s transition to cleaner logistics solutions.
