1 MWp Floating Solar Project Underway in Paraguay

03 Aug 2025  by offshore energy
Itaipu Binacional, a joint venture equally owned by Brazil and Paraguay dedicated to clean and renewable energy, has started installing its first floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) system on the Paraguayan side of the Itaipu Reservoir. The 1 MWp project integrates solar power with the existing hydropower infrastructure, advancing sustainable energy solutions in South America.

“Great news for the #EnergyTransition in South America! Itaipu Binacional has begun installing its first floating solar plant (1 MWp) on the Paraguayan side of the Itaipu Reservoir – a major step toward hybrid, sustainable energy solutions in the region,” stated OWC in a social media post.

The initiative is supported by OWC, an engineering consultancy providing technical and planning expertise. OWC’s contributions include site selection, project layout optimization, float system evaluation, anchoring and mooring design, energy yield analysis, performance monitoring, environmental licensing documentation, technical specification development, and engineering support during installation and operation.

“At #OWC, we are proud to support the development of #FloatingSolar (FPV) projects – from early-stage concept to successful operation. Through our dedicated team in South America and deep knowledge of the regional energy landscape, OWC is ready to contribute to your next floating solar development,” OWC shared in a social media update.

This project represents a significant milestone in combining renewable energy technologies, leveraging the Itaipu Reservoir’s infrastructure to promote sustainable energy production in the region.
