Robert Allan to Design Electric Tug for China’s Tianjin Port

28 Jul 2025  by offshore energy
Canadian naval architecture firm Robert Allan has been contracted to design a battery-electric tugboat for Tianjin Port in Northern China. The AmpRA 3600 tug, to be built at Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard, marks the first Robert Allan-designed fully electric vessel to operate in China. Construction is set to begin in 2025.

The tug will operate entirely on battery power, eliminating diesel engines and onboard generator sets. Measuring 35.8 meters in length with a moulded breadth of 11.2 meters, the vessel will deliver a 62-tonne bollard pull. Key equipment includes over 7 MWh of batteries supplied by CATL, an electrical system from the 704 Institute, and L-drives provided by Nanjing High Accurate Marine Equipment, all sourced from Chinese manufacturers.

This project highlights the growing adoption of sustainable marine technology in China’s northern ports, aligning with efforts to reduce emissions in maritime operations.

In a parallel development, Southern China has introduced its first fully electric harbor tugboat, named Siugang Diantuo 01, at the Port of Guangzhou. Designed by the 605 Institute of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and constructed by Lianyungang Port Holding Group, the 38-meter-long tug entered service in 2025. This milestone follows the launch of Yungang Electric Tug 01, another all-electric tug unveiled by Lianyungang Port Holding Group in 2021, showcasing China’s ongoing commitment to eco-friendly maritime solutions.

The deployment of Siugang Diantuo 01 at Guangzhou Port strengthens the region’s capacity for sustainable port operations. Both projects reflect advancements in battery-powered vessels, supporting cleaner and more efficient maritime logistics across China’s coastal regions.

These initiatives demonstrate a collaborative effort between international design expertise and local manufacturing capabilities, fostering innovation in the maritime sector. The introduction of these electric tugboats at Tianjin and Guangzhou ports underscores a broader trend toward sustainable technology in China’s maritime industry, enhancing operational efficiency while prioritizing environmental considerations.
