Manitou Group, a French equipment manufacturer, and Hangcha Group, a Chinese industrial vehicle company, have formed a joint venture to construct a lithium-ion battery factory in Le Mans, northern France. The facility aims to produce advanced battery solutions, enabling users to transition from lead-acid to longer-lasting lithium-ion batteries for industrial vehicles. The partnership, announced recently, awaits approval from European competition authorities.

The initiative supports the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions in industrial applications. The new factory will leverage Hangcha’s expertise in lithium battery technology to enhance the performance of electric vehicle power systems. “Leveraging Hangcha’s core technological and manufacturing strengths in lithium battery solutions, we will collaboratively enhance solution capability of new energy industrial vehicle power systems,” said Zhao Limin, Hangcha Group’s chairman. This collaboration aligns with Manitou’s goal to have 28% of its vehicle sales be electric by 2030, reflecting a commitment to sustainable innovation.

Located in Le Mans, the factory will focus on producing lithium-ion batteries, which offer greater durability and efficiency compared to traditional lead-acid batteries. This upgrade is expected to benefit users by extending vehicle lifespan and reducing maintenance needs, supporting industries reliant on electric forklifts and other equipment. The joint venture combines Manitou’s market presence in Europe with Hangcha’s advanced manufacturing capabilities, fostering a synergy that enhances the availability of eco-friendly power solutions.

The project represents a significant step toward advancing clean energy in industrial vehicles, addressing the need for reliable and sustainable battery systems. By establishing the facility in France, the partnership aims to meet regional demand while contributing to the local economy through job creation and technological development. The initiative also aligns with broader industry trends toward electrification and reduced environmental impact.

Pending regulatory approval, the joint venture is poised to strengthen the position of both companies in the global market for electric industrial vehicles. The collaboration underscores a shared vision for innovation, combining expertise to deliver high-quality, sustainable solutions. As the demand for electric vehicles grows, the Le Mans factory is expected to play a key role in supporting the transition to cleaner energy systems across various industries.
