HOCHTIEF Secures $199.1m Rail Refurbishment Contract From Deutsche Bahn

HOCHTIEF, a global infrastructure company, has secured a contract worth over €170 million from Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s mobility provider, to refurbish a 42km double-track railway section along the right bank of the Rhine. The project, set to run from July to December 2026, includes upgrading ten level crossings, renovating twelve train stations, and building two pedestrian underpasses. Preparatory work for this significant modernization effort, which supports Germany’s rail infrastructure improvement, began in mid-2025.

Completion is forecast in December 2026.

In addition to the Rhine project, HOCHTIEF is involved in a major rail initiative in Munich. A joint venture including HOCHTIEF was awarded a contract to construct the second main line of Munich’s S-Bahn network, connecting Ostbahnhof and Marienhof stations in the city center. This project complements the ongoing construction of the Marienhof underground S-Bahn station, which started in 2018.

Juan Santamaría, CEO of HOCHTIEF, stated: “With the expansion and renewal of railways, we are making a significant contribution to improving transportation infrastructure in Germany. The €500bn infrastructure investment package recently approved by the Bundestag parliament offers enormous opportunities to accelerate the modernisation of the country.”

HOCHTIEF operates globally through its four segments—Turner, CIMIC, Engineering and Construction, and Abertis—focusing on advanced technology, sustainable mobility, energy transition, and resource management. The company’s expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects positions it as a key player in modernizing transportation networks.

Beyond Germany, HOCHTIEF is expanding its infrastructure portfolio. In the Netherlands, the GelreGroen joint venture, in which HOCHTIEF holds a 40% stake alongside John Laing, Dura Vermeer, and BESIX, was awarded a contract by Rijkswaterstaat. This project involves the planning, construction, and maintenance of a major highway, further demonstrating HOCHTIEF’s commitment to enhancing global mobility infrastructure.

The Rhine railway refurbishment and Munich S-Bahn projects highlight HOCHTIEF’s role in advancing sustainable and efficient transportation systems. By upgrading critical rail infrastructure, the company supports improved connectivity and reliability for passengers, contributing to Germany’s broader goals of modernizing its transportation network and promoting sustainable mobility solutions.
