New 25-Year Agreement to Help Port of Gothenburg Become Energy Hub of the Future

On July 1, 2025, the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden, finalized new agreements with Inter Terminals Sweden, a leading Scandinavian provider of bulk liquid storage, to support its transformation into a future-focused energy hub. These agreements aim to enhance long-term stability and foster investments in sustainable energy solutions for both parties.

The agreements include lease contracts for above-ground areas and underground rock caverns, as well as a cargo port dues arrangement based on traffic and volume. These terms outline the compensation Inter Terminals Sweden will provide for using the port’s land, facilities, and infrastructure. The collaboration strengthens the port’s capacity to transition from fossil-based to renewable energy products.

Göran Eriksson, CEO of the Port of Gothenburg, stated: “With a 25-year agreement, we gain long-term stability and predictability, giving us a solid foundation for developing an energy port for the future focused on transitioning from fossil to renewable products. Having a skilled, long-term, and responsible partner like Inter Terminals Sweden with us in this effort is something we see as very positive.”

Inter Terminals Sweden, a key player in the storage and logistics of liquid energy products since 1964, is the port’s third-largest customer in the energy sector. The company is increasingly handling biofuels such as HVO and methanol. Johan Zettergren, Managing Director of Inter Terminals Sweden, noted: “We have already begun transitioning our operations, and at the Port of Gothenburg, we’re already handling renewable fuels like FAME and HVO. With longer lease terms and a more transparent and predictable cost structure, we are now better positioned to scale up further – for example, by converting or building new tanks for renewable raw materials and products, as well as investing in new technology and an expanded green portfolio.”

In a related development, the Port of Gothenburg took steps last month to enable shore power connections for container and car/RoRo ships by 2030. The port awarded a €11.4 million contract to AF Bygg Väst, part of AF Gruppen Sweden, to construct a transformer station with a 19 MVA capacity to support the port’s container and car terminals.

Additionally, in mid-May 2025, the port facilitated the bunkering of domestically produced liquefied biomethane to a tanker, aligning with its goal to become Scandinavia’s leading hub for alternative fuels bunkering. These efforts reflect the port’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and infrastructure development, supporting regional demand for renewable energy solutions without impacting trade balances.
