SYSTRA Selected to Support Monaco Cross-Border Express Line Project

27 Jun 2025  by worldconstructionnetwork
SYSTRA, a construction engineering company, has been chosen to assist in developing a cross-border express line connecting France and Monaco, aimed at reducing road congestion and redirecting commuter and tourist traffic from Nice. Named ‘Operation La Brasca,’ the project features an underground, automated transport link between the French municipalities of Èze and La Turbie and Monaco, with operations planned to commence in 2025.

The new line is set to offer efficient and sustainable access to the city-state.

The express line is designed to provide an efficient and sustainable alternative to car travel, offering competitive journey times. Monaco’s train station, the second busiest on the French Riviera, and the daily influx of over 15,000 vehicles highlight the need for alternative transportation solutions. SYSTRA’s expertise in technical assistance for project management, demonstrated in France’s West and East Line 15 projects, led to its selection by Monegasque authorities for this initiative.

SYSTRA will guide the project from its initial stages through to the selection of a consortium, overseeing the design and implementation of the cross-border transport system. “Operation La Brasca will mobilise a very wide range of skills and expertise, and SYSTRA France is one of the few engineering companies to bring them all together,” said Ariane Galy, SYSTRA France project director. “The Principality of Monaco needed a consultant to support it at every stage of the project, and we are proud to have been selected to do just that.”

The project aims to ease urban congestion and enhance connectivity, potentially serving as a model for similar initiatives in other urban centers. By integrating advanced engineering and automation, the express line will support sustainable mobility for commuters and tourists. Additionally, SYSTRA France has secured a nine-year contract for the Bordeaux-Toulouse and Bordeaux-Dax high-speed rail project, noted as France’s largest rail infrastructure undertaking.

This cross-border initiative underscores Monaco’s commitment to innovative transport solutions, addressing the region’s traffic challenges while promoting environmentally friendly travel options. SYSTRA’s involvement ensures comprehensive project management, leveraging its technical expertise to deliver a reliable and efficient transport system.
