NEDO Works With Nissin Electric on India’s Micro Substation Project

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has partnered with Nissin Electric to conduct a demonstration research project on micro substations, launched on June 23, 2025. The initiative, part of Japan’s subsidized International Demonstration Project for Decarbonization and Energy Transition, aims to provide a low environmental impact power supply in areas of India with underdeveloped electricity grids.

Located on the outskirts of Delhi, the micro substation is managed by TATA Power-Delhi Distribution Limited (TATA Power-DDL). It converts extra high-voltage (EHV) power from transmission lines directly into low-voltage power for local distribution. The project seeks to confirm the reliability and efficiency of this power supply method, ensuring stable electricity delivery in regions with limited or no grid infrastructure.

Nissin Electric is utilizing its advanced transformer technology to enable micro substations to draw low-voltage power (240V) directly from high-capacity EHV transmission lines, such as those at 66kV or higher, using power voltage transformers (PVTs). Each micro substation, equipped with protective devices, switchgear, lightning arresters, and a distribution board, can deliver 100 kilo-volt-amperes of power, sufficient to supply 50 to 100 households without the need for large-scale distribution substations.

The micro substations offer significant advantages, including lower operational costs by eliminating generator refueling and maintenance. They require less space than traditional setups and reduce CO₂ emissions by 45% compared to diesel generators. Nissin Electric’s technology enables cost-effective and stable power delivery without extensive infrastructure development.

The project’s broader goal is to establish a model for sustainable electricity supply in regions with similar energy challenges. Nissin Electric plans to expand this technology across India and other areas with underdeveloped grids, contributing to global decarbonization efforts.
