MODEC and UK Firm Going in Hot Pursuit of FPSO-Based Carbon Capture Tech

Japan-based MODEC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UK-headquartered Carbon Clean Solutions to explore the deployment of offshore carbon capture technology on floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) units. The collaboration aims to reduce emissions from FPSO operations by applying Carbon Clean’s compact on-board carbon capture solution (OCCS).

The partnership will focus on adapting Carbon Clean’s CycloneCC technology to MODEC’s FPSO platforms, using the company’s design and technical standards. CycloneCC features a reduced equipment footprint, with some components up to ten times smaller than those used in traditional systems. The latest C1 series offers a 70% height reduction compared to conventional column-based technologies.

This initiative is aligned with MODEC’s ongoing strategy, following its recently announced pilot project with Samsung. The joint effort with Carbon Clean will assess how to scale CycloneCC to match the typical emission profiles of MODEC’s FPSOs. The objective is to determine the potential for integrating post-combustion carbon capture (PCC) systems into future FPSO developments as a standard feature.

If successful, the collaboration may lead to the construction of an offshore PCC pilot plant tailored to selected projects. This effort supports MODEC’s mid-term plan to incorporate advanced emission control technologies in its offshore operations.

Koichi Matsumiya, Chief Technical Officer of MODEC, stated: “Based upon the early success of the partnership that we are currently enjoying with Carbon Clean on the pilot plant project, we decided to take this daring step to commit early to accelerating this work. As a technology integrator and offshore solutions provider, we must remain committed to our core values and continue to seek realization of our vision to explore ways to contribute to society humbly and diligently.”

MODEC sees the integration of carbon capture as a way to enhance its emissions mitigation options and provide more choices to clients developing offshore fields. The company also highlighted the importance of natural gas in the energy transition and emphasized its continued role in ensuring energy stability.

Aniruddha Sharma, Chair and CEO of Carbon Clean, said: “MODEC is setting the pace for the next generation of FPSO development, and we’re proud to support their leadership with our cutting-edge carbon capture technology. This agreement is a major step toward commercializing onboard carbon capture for FPSOs and sets a precedent for the broader maritime industry. As the International Maritime Organization’s emissions regulations develop in support of maritime decarbonization, CycloneCC offers a scalable and viable solution to help vessels meet these targets and achieve full emissions reductions before the end of this decade.”

Through this collaboration, MODEC aims to enhance its competitiveness, support client decarbonization goals, and align with environmental standards, contributing to a more sustainable energy future.
