$28 Billion LNG Export Project Breaks Ground in Louisiana

04 Jun 2025  by offshore energy
Venture Global, a U.S.-based liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer, has begun site work for its CP2 LNG export project in Louisiana, marking its third facility in five years. The project, located in Cameron Parish, aims to supply LNG to global markets starting in 2027.

The CP2 project received conditional approval to export LNG to non-free trade agreement countries, followed by final approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). This milestone enables full mobilization at the site. Upon completion, Venture Global anticipates becoming the largest LNG exporter in the U.S. and the second largest globally, following the Calcasieu Pass project’s launch in March 2022 and Plaquemines LNG exports starting in late 2024.

Mike Sabel, CEO of Venture Global, stated: “Venture Global applauds the Commission and FERC staff for their continued work to advance critical U.S. energy projects like CP2 LNG that support our allies abroad and thousands of jobs here at home. With all federal approvals now in hand we are excited to announce that we have launched on-site work for this project, which is expected to deliver reliable low-cost LNG to the world starting in 2027.”

The CP2 project is expected to contribute over $4 billion in local property taxes during its operation and create approximately 3,000 jobs in Louisiana, including 400 permanent positions. At its construction peak, it will employ around 7,500 workers directly and support tens of thousands of indirect jobs across more than 30 states. The $28 billion terminal, situated on a 1,150-acre site along the Calcasieu Ship Channel, leverages Venture Global’s modularized LNG facility design for efficiency.

Significant off-site work, including engineering and equipment procurement, is also underway. The CP Express pipeline, originating in Jasper and Newton County, Texas, will supply natural gas to the facility. “This significant engineering and off-site progress now positions CP2 as one of the most advanced LNG export projects under development in the United States and we believe, once completed, will position Venture Global to become the top exporter of U.S. LNG,” a company representative noted.

The project is designed to provide clean, reliable energy to customers in Europe, Japan, and other regions, supporting global energy demands with cost-effective LNG.
