Aker Solutions Secures Steel Substructure Contract for BalWin2

03 Jun 2025  by power-technology
Aker Solutions, a Norwegian company, has secured a contract from Dragados Offshore to supply the steel substructure for the BalWin2 high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter station, part of Amprion Offshore’s 2-gigawatt offshore wind grid connection system in Germany. The contract is valued between Nkr1.5 billion ($148.4 million) and Nkr2.5 billion.

The BalWin2 offshore wind grid connection system has been developed by Amprion Offshore.

This contract follows a previous agreement in February 2025 for the steel substructure of the BalWin1 offshore wind grid connection. The BalWin2 contract exercises an option for the second HVDC converter station within the BalWin project. Sturla Magnus, Aker Solutions’ executive vice-president for the new build segment, stated: “We are proud that Dragados Offshore has selected Aker Solutions as the contractor for the second BalWin steel substructure. This will enable us to leverage our standardisation and industrialisation efforts to increase productivity and drive down costs.”

The fabrication will take place at Aker Solutions’ yard in Verdal, Norway, employing up to 450 workers at peak production. The scope includes procurement, fabrication engineering, and construction of the offshore HVDC converter platform substructure. Preparations will start in the first quarter of 2026, with construction beginning in the first quarter of 2027 and delivery expected in 2029. The contract will be recorded in Aker Solutions’ Renewables and Field Development segment in the second quarter of 2025.

The BalWin1 and BalWin2 systems, each with 2-gigawatt HVDC offshore and onshore substations, will efficiently transmit renewable electricity. Together, they provide a 4-gigawatt transmission capacity, sufficient to power a major city like Berlin. These projects support Germany’s renewable energy infrastructure, contributing to sustainable energy goals.

Aker Solutions’ expertise in standardized production enhances the BalWin2 project’s efficiency, ensuring reliable renewable energy delivery. The partnership with Dragados Offshore highlights Norway’s contribution to Europe’s offshore wind development.
