Moeve and Armas Trasmediterránea Strike Marine Biofuel Supply Deal

02 Jun 2025  by offshore energy
Spanish energy company Moeve, previously known as Cepsa, has entered into a strategic agreement with Armas Trasmediterránea, a Spanish shipping company, to supply second-generation (2G) marine biofuels in the Canary Islands. This deal, announced in May 2025, represents Moeve’s largest biofuel supply to date and its first in this region. Under the long-term contract, Moeve will deliver approximately 40,000 tons of biofuels through December 2025, with the possibility of extending into 2026.

Moeve highlighted that 2G renewable biofuels can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% over their life cycle compared to conventional fuels, supporting sustainable maritime transport. These biofuels are compatible with existing infrastructure and engines, facilitating their adoption in the shipping sector. Samir Fernández, Moeve’s Director of Marine Fuel Solutions, stated: “The agreement with Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea opens a major door for us, positioning us as a key player in the decarbonization of the maritime sector in the Canary Islands.”

Óscar Martínez, Corporate Commercial Director at Armas Trasmediterránea, noted: “It’s not only our natural working environment, it’s also a heritage we have the responsibility to preserve.” The partnership underscores Armas Trasmediterránea’s commitment to reducing emissions and protecting the marine environment. Beatriz Calzada, President of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, said: “The agreement aligns perfectly with our strategy to transition toward green fuels.” Similarly, Pedro Suárez, President of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, added: “This first fuel supply marks a key milestone toward enabling more sustainable port calls and a more competitive port overall.”

Moeve produces these biofuels at its San Roque Energy Park in Cádiz and La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva, supplying major Spanish ports like Algeciras, Barcelona, Ceuta, and Huelva. The initiative is part of Moeve’s 2030 Positive Motion strategy, which focuses on decarbonizing heavy transport sectors, including maritime, through green molecule production. Moeve aims to lead biofuel production in Spain and Portugal by 2030, targeting an annual capacity of 2.5 million tons.

The agreement supports sustainable shipping in the Canary Islands, reducing environmental impact without affecting fuel consumption or trade dynamics. It strengthens Moeve’s role in advancing clean energy solutions for Spain’s maritime sector.
