The project aims to establish an innovative experimental benchmark and validate advanced neutronics codes.
The funding was awarded through a joint call for projects by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TA ČR). The EVANS project aims to create an innovative experimental benchmark to improve the accuracy of neutronics codes, thereby strengthening safety protocols in nuclear power plants across Europe.
Lionel Gaiffe, senior executive vice-president of Framatome’s Fuel Business Unit, stated: “Framatome welcomes this funding from the French National Research Agency and the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic. We are proud to work with our Czech partners in advancing and strengthening nuclear research and innovation in Europe.” The collaboration is expected to enhance the predictive capabilities of nuclear plant operations, contributing to safer and more reliable energy production.
The project stems from a 2023 memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Framatome, ÚJV Řež, and Research Centre Řež, which established a framework for deeper research cooperation between France and the Czech Republic. The MoU emphasizes technical exchanges on water-water energetic reactors (VVER), pressurized water reactors (PWR), and fuel design development in the Czech Republic, fostering advancements in nuclear technology.
Martin Ruščák, CEO of ÚJV Řež, commented: “Support of French National Research Agency and the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic to the EVANS project highlights the needs for common R&D [research and development] utilising unique research infrastructure [of] the LR-0 reactor to enhance nuclear safety. We are committed to provide excellent results moving the nuclear sector forward in Europe and beyond.” The project represents a key step in strengthening nuclear research ties between the two nations.
In July 2024, Framatome also signed an agreement with Slovenské elektrárne, a Slovak utility, to supply fuel for its VVER reactors starting in 2027, further expanding its contributions to European nuclear energy.
