ACCIONA Energía has launched commercial operations at its Forty Mile wind farm in Alberta, Canada, marking a significant milestone in its North American operations. The 280MW facility ranks among Canada’s top ten largest wind farms and is the company’s largest wind project in the region.

The wind farm features 49 Nordex turbines with 5.7MW capacity and 108m towers.

The wind farm features 49 Nordex turbines, each with a 5.7MW capacity and a 108-meter tower height. It is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 600,000 metric tons annually, equivalent to the environmental impact of planting 25 million trees. This contributes significantly to sustainable energy production in Alberta.

During construction, the project created 200 direct jobs, boosting local employment. Once operational, it will sustain 25 full-time positions for ongoing operations and maintenance. The wind farm is also projected to generate over C$85 million in property tax revenue throughout its lifespan, supporting public services and enhancing community well-being in the region.

ACCIONA Energía has demonstrated a commitment to social initiatives by providing financial support to local organizations, including the Bow Island Food Bank, the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub, and the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society. These efforts reflect the company’s focus on fostering positive community impact.

With over 20 years of operations in North America, ACCIONA Energía manages a diverse renewable energy portfolio with a total installed capacity of 3.45GW. This includes solar, concentrated solar power, wind, and battery energy storage systems across the region. The Forty Mile wind farm strengthens the company’s position as a leader in renewable energy development.

In a separate development, ACCIONA Energía and BHP announced a partnership in April 2025 to assess the feasibility of a pumped hydro energy storage project at the Mt Arthur Coal mine in New South Wales, Australia. BHP stated: “This initiative is in line with our strategy to responsibly manage the mine’s closure by 2030,” aligning with the mine’s planned end of economic operations.

The Forty Mile wind farm underscores ACCIONA Energía’s dedication to expanding clean energy infrastructure while supporting local economies and environmental goals in Canada and beyond.
