The Columbia Generating Station, the Pacific Northwest’s third-largest power resource and only operational nuclear plant, currently generates 1,207MW. The EPU project involves approximately 30 upgrades, focusing on replacing and enhancing equipment such as turbines, heat exchangers, and the generator, with an emphasis on increasing the capacity of pumps and motors. Additionally, energy efficiency improvements planned during refueling outages in 2027, 2029, and 2031 will contribute an extra 24MW, bringing the total capacity increase to 186MW. This additional power will support BPA’s federal system, serving consumer-owned utilities across six Northwest states.
“We applaud BPA for its decision to approve this project and for its strategic vision in advancing our region’s future with additional reliable capacity that nuclear energy can provide,” said Bob Schuetz, Energy Northwest CEO. “Their leadership in supporting this initiative underscores a commitment to affordable electricity for the Northwest region, including our public power member utilities and their customers.”
Following 18 months of detailed analysis, BPA’s approval enables the project to advance into its planning and implementation phase, set to span the next six years with completion targeted for 2031. The collaboration between Energy Northwest and BPA aims to ensure a reliable and cost-effective energy solution for the region.
“This is a great value for ratepayers in the Pacific Northwest,” said John Hairston, BPA administrator and CEO. “Upgrading an existing resource to provide additional reliable energy will help BPA keep pace with its customers’ growing electricity needs and keep rates low.”
The project aligns with efforts to meet increasing energy demands while maintaining affordability. Michael Goff, Department of Energy acting undersecretary for infrastructure, noted: “President Trump and Secretary Wright have made it clear: expanding America’s nuclear energy capacity will be essential for meeting growing demand for affordable, reliable and secure energy. This project exemplifies the energy vision for America by unleashing new power generation for the people of the Pacific Northwest without raising costs.”
The EPU project enhances the Columbia Generating Station’s role as a key energy provider, ensuring sustainable and efficient power for the region’s future.
