Argentina Publishes Details of 500 MW Battery Tender

23 May 2025  by pv magazine
On February 18, 2025, Argentina’s Wholesale Electricity Market Administration Company (CAMMESA) released a contract template to assist participants in the 500 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) tender, known as AlmaGBA Storage, launched by the Argentine Energy Secretariat. The tender, aimed at enhancing energy reliability in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA), involves an estimated investment of $500 million, with project completion expected within 12 to 18 months.

The AlmaGBA tender seeks to deploy advanced battery storage systems to ensure a stable electricity supply, particularly during peak demand periods. CAMMESA, responsible for managing Argentina’s wholesale electricity market, will oversee the bidding process and act as a guarantor for contracts signed with distributors Edenor and Edesur. The initiative focuses on installing storage capacity at critical grid points in AMBA to improve energy efficiency and grid stability.

According to the contract template, successful bidders will enter agreements lasting up to 15 years, starting from the date of commercial authorization of the BESS or January 1, 2027, whichever occurs earlier. Bidders are required to provide a bank guarantee of $10,000 per MW based on the maximum storage power offered. The tender’s financial structure includes a fixed payment of $10 per MW of electricity supplied, with storage capacity bids capped at $15,000 per MW per month.

The bidding process follows a clear timeline: consultations are open from February 19 to May 4, 2025, with responses published between February 24 and May 11, 2025. The contract template will be finalized by March 31, 2025, bids are due by May 19, 2025, and awards will be announced on June 27, 2025. Contracts are expected to be signed by June 30, 2025. The latest date for commercial authorization of the equipment is December 31, 2028.

This initiative reflects Argentina’s commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure through private investment and innovative technology, ensuring a reliable electricity supply for the AMBA region. Authorities have encouraged other provinces to adopt similar strategies to enhance energy security nationwide.
