Located on Tunnel No. 5 of the Tarbela Dam, the project is scheduled to begin generating electricity in 2026. It will contribute 1,530MW to the National Grid through three 510MW units, producing approximately 1.347 billion kilowatt-hours of cost-effective, renewable energy each year.
The project, valued at $807 million, is supported by funding from the World Bank ($390 million) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank ($300 million). Upon completion, the Tarbela Dam’s total installed capacity will rise from 4,888MW to 6,418MW, enhancing Pakistan’s renewable energy infrastructure.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held in August 2021, was led by then-Prime Minister Imran Khan. A WAPDA spokesperson stated: “The Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project is a vital step in our commitment to expanding renewable energy and improving water management for sustainable development.”
This initiative aligns with Pakistan’s Decade of Dams 2018–28 strategy, which focuses on increasing clean energy production and optimizing water resources. The project is expected to strengthen energy security and support sustainable development in the region.
