Fluor Corporation, based in Irving, Texas, announced that Bayer’s Cell Therapy Launch Facility in Berkeley, California, has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) v4 Platinum Certification, marking it as the first industrial manufacturing facility in the western United States to receive this distinction. Additionally, the facility was named the 2025 Facility of the Year for Social Impact – Unmet Medical Needs by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE).

The LEED v4 Platinum Certification represents the highest standard for sustainable building practices, recognizing facilities that excel in environmental performance. The 144,000-square-foot facility, equipped with 30,000 square feet of cleanroom space, is designed to advance cell therapy production for neurological degenerative disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and other critical medical needs.

Fluor’s role included engineering, procurement, construction management, commissioning, qualification, and validation of the state-of-the-art facility. Richard Meserole, President of Fluor’s Advanced Technologies & Life Sciences business, stated: “Fluor and Bayer collaborated to deliver Bayer’s first fully electric pharmaceutical manufacturing plant, and we met an aggressive schedule to support client and patient needs. Fluor secured LEED v4 Platinum Certification and ISPE Facility of the Year designation through effective collaboration with our trade partners, lean construction methods, and dedication to quality.”

The facility incorporates significant sustainability features, achieving 52.6% energy cost savings through LED lighting, high-efficiency systems, heat pumps, and rooftop solar installations. It also features 100% process water reduction, 98% onsite rainfall management, high-efficiency plumbing, 65% recycled content in construction, and the use of sustainable materials, alongside optimized land use and innovative design credits.

This project marks Fluor’s second collaboration with Bayer at its Berkeley Biotech campus, following the completion of Bayer’s Single Use Technology biopharmaceutical manufacturing Cell Culture Technology Center in 2021. The Cell Therapy Launch Facility underscores Fluor’s expertise in delivering sustainable, high-impact facilities that support advancements in medical treatment and environmental responsibility.
