Norsk Hydro to Assess Major Upgrade of Hydropower Facilities at Rjukan

Norsk Hydro, a Norwegian energy company, is planning a major upgrade to its hydropower facilities in Rjukan, Norway. The company will initiate an impact assessment in 2025 to prepare for a potential concession application for a new power plant, aiming to modernize its operations and enhance the region’s energy infrastructure.

The project focuses on improving Norsk Hydro’s hydropower production by increasing flexibility and adding pumped storage capacity to Norway’s power grid. The proposed expansion could boost peak production and pumping capacity by up to 750MW. While net production will remain similar to current levels, gross annual output along the Rjukan section of the Måna river could increase by up to 50%, optimizing the company’s existing 3TWh annual power output in the region.

The upgrade is designed to improve water resource management and ensure reliable power supply during periods of high demand. Additionally, the project is expected to contribute to local economic growth and reduce flood risks in the area. “The work to upgrade power production is part of our long-term commitment to renewable energy and Norwegian industrial development,” said Kari Thørud, Executive Vice President of Hydro Energy.

Field studies and impact assessments are scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2025, with a concession application planned for early 2026. Norsk Hydro emphasizes community engagement throughout the process. “We are looking forward to continuing with these plans. We want broad involvement and close dialogue with local communities and municipalities. We are committed to working together to find good solutions, where we minimize the impact on nature and the environment,” said Pål Thorud, Plant Manager at Rjukan.

The Rjukan operations include the Frøystul, Vemork, Såheim, Moflåt, and Mæl power plants. Norsk Hydro has evaluated multiple upgrade options, all of which involve maintaining the use of existing facilities. The preferred plan includes constructing a new pumped storage facility and a tunnel connecting Møsvatn and Tinnsjøen, enhancing the efficiency of the hydropower system.

This initiative aligns with Norsk Hydro’s broader strategy to secure a stable power supply and maintain competitive electricity prices for Norwegian industries, supporting both sustainability and economic objectives in the region.
