EEW and GEA Launch Strategic Partnership for CO2 Capture

EEW Energy from Waste (EEW), based in Helmstedt, Germany, and GEA Group AG, a machine and plant manufacturer from Duesseldorf, Germany, have formed a strategic partnership to advance CO₂ capture technologies. Their collaboration focuses on testing and refining innovative CO₂ capture and utilization processes under real-world conditions, with the goal of scaling them for industrial use.

As an initial step, EEW has purchased a mobile test plant from GEA, which will be deployed at various EEW sites starting in summer 2025, beginning in Delfzijl, Netherlands. This plant will provide data on the efficiency, scalability, and integration of CO₂ capture into existing thermal waste recycling processes. Joachim Manns, Chief Operating Officer of EEW Group, stated: “Together, we are focusing on state-of-the-art technologies for CO₂ capture in order to pave the way for large-scale implementation.” He added: “The test plant acquired as part of the cooperation is a decisive step towards increasing energy efficiency, relieving the burden on plants and increasing the technological maturity of carbon capture solutions.”

Felix Ortloff, Senior Director of Carbon Capture Solutions at GEA, remarked: “With the new test plant and the technology used, we are supporting EEW in its decarbonization goal and on the path to achieving it.” GEA’s solutions encompass gas purification, heat extraction, CO₂ separation, and liquefaction, significantly reducing emissions. Manns emphasized the need for regulatory support, stating: “We are in the starting blocks. But we need clear rules to get started.” He highlighted that a clear legal framework for CO₂ transportation, storage, use, and remuneration is essential for large-scale projects.

The partnership leverages thermal waste utilization, where over half of EEW’s emissions are biogenic. Capturing and storing this CO₂ could generate negative emissions, supporting climate goals. The initiative aligns with efforts to enhance energy efficiency and promote sustainable industrial practices across Europe.
