First Steel Cast for Uzbekistan SMR

20 May 2025  by neimagazine
At the AEM-Spetstal Metallurgical Plant, part of Rosatom’s Mechanical Engineering Division, a 205-tonne ingot of special alloy steel has been cast. This ingot will be used to manufacture the flange for the RITM-200N reactor vessel, a component of a low-power nuclear power plant (ASMM) under construction in Uzbekistan’s Jizzakh region.

After completing necessary processes at AEM-Spetstal, the flange will be sent to other division enterprises for assembly into the complete reactor vessel. Igor Kotov, Head of Rosatom’s Engineering Division, stated: “The enterprises of the Mechanical Engineering Division have the necessary capacities and experience in the manufacture of reactor units of the RITM series, which have been operating in the icebreaker fleet for several years.” He added: “Our knowledge and competencies will be applied in the manufacture of all six RITM-200N reactor plants for ASMM in Uzbekistan.”

The RITM reactor series powers four nuclear icebreakers—Arktika, Ural, Siberia, and Yakutia—demonstrating reliability and safety. The RITM-200N, adapted for land-based use, has a capacity of 55 MWe and a service life of up to 60 years. The Uzbekistan ASMM project includes six such reactors, totaling 330 MWe, to support sustainable energy production.

Preliminary work for the ASMM began in the summer of 2024. In April 2025, construction started on a base to support administrative and industrial facilities throughout the project’s duration. The agreement for the ASMM’s construction was signed in May 2024 by Rosatom’s Atomstroyexport and Uzbekistan’s Directorate for Nuclear Power Plants during a high-level bilateral meeting.

The project reflects advanced engineering and collaborative efforts to deliver clean energy solutions, enhancing regional energy infrastructure and sustainability.
