Korea Southern Power and Ulsan City have entered into a business development agreement to build clean hydrogen power plants, marking a significant step in the region’s push for sustainable energy. The agreement, signed on May 15 by Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom and Korea Southern Power CEO Kim Joon-dong, involves a 600 billion won (approximately $450 million USD) investment in the construction of a 135MW clean hydrogen facility. This plant, located in the Mipo National Industrial Complex, will be operational by 2031, using 100% hydrogen to generate electricity with zero carbon emissions.

The project aligns with Ulsan’s ongoing efforts to establish itself as a leading hydrogen economy hub in Korea. It will be part of the city's broader strategy, which includes hydrogen pilot cities, the development of a hydrogen cluster, and the creation of special zones for hydrogen green mobility. An official from Ulsan City expressed confidence, stating: "Ulsan is making a leap to become the largest hydrogen economy city in Korea through hydrogen pilot cities, hydrogen cluster creation, and hydrogen green mobility regulation-free special zones. We expect the region's hydrogen supply and utilization system to be further advanced."

The clean hydrogen power plant will be built on the site of the National Industrial Complex Cospo Youngnam Power. It will operate entirely on hydrogen, with a turbine system that ensures no carbon emissions during electricity production. This initiative underscores Korea Southern Power's commitment to contributing to the global transition toward cleaner energy sources.

Korea Southern Power’s involvement in the project goes beyond just constructing the facility; the company has pledged to hire local residents for the workforce required to carry out the project. Additionally, Ulsan City will provide administrative support, such as fast-tracking permits and licenses to facilitate the project’s smooth execution.

This collaboration is expected to play a significant role in furthering Ulsan’s ambitions of becoming a key player in hydrogen energy, a sector seen as vital for the region’s future energy security and sustainability goals. The clean hydrogen plant will help reduce the reliance on traditional fossil fuels, providing a model for other regions looking to transition to green energy sources.

By 2031, the facility will contribute to the growing hydrogen economy in Ulsan, supporting both local employment and environmental goals. The plant’s operation with 100% hydrogen fuel demonstrates a significant commitment to reducing carbon emissions and advancing renewable energy infrastructure in Korea.
