Oman’s Wheat Production to Exceed 7,700 Tons

14 May 2025  by ukragroconsult
Omani farmers have started harvesting their 2024-2025 wheat crop, with authorities anticipating a yield exceeding 7,700 tonnes, a slight increase from the 7,500 tonnes of the previous season. This growth is supported by government programs providing subsidies for 30 tonnes of wheat seeds and free access to harvesting equipment. Wheat is a key crop for Oman’s food security, and farmers benefit from technical assistance and modern irrigation systems to boost productivity. Despite these efforts, Oman imported several hundred thousand tonnes of wheat in 2023-2024, as local production meets only a small portion of national demand.

Wheat is favored for its low water needs, high nutritional value, and affordability. Oman Flour Mills is overseeing the harvest, while the Agriculture and Fisheries Development Fund is promoting the expansion of cultivated land to enhance future output. These initiatives aim to strengthen domestic production and support sustainable agricultural practices.

Although local wheat production is increasing, Oman relies heavily on imports to maintain a stable food supply. The combination of domestic efforts and imported wheat ensures the country meets its consumption needs. Farmers are optimistic about the season’s outcome, supported by ongoing investments in agricultural infrastructure.

The focus on wheat reflects Oman’s commitment to improving food security through strategic crops. By providing resources and modern tools, the government is empowering farmers to increase yields while addressing environmental challenges. The slight rise in production this season signals progress, with potential for further growth as more land is cultivated and efficiency improves.
