Koppö Energia Selects Thyssenkrupp Uhde’s Green Methanol Technology

Thyssenkrupp Uhde GmbH (Dortmund, Germany) has announced that Koppö Energia Oy has selected its green methanol technology for the development of an e-methanol plant in Kristinestad, Finland. The project is part of a Power-to-X (P2X) initiative by Koppö Energia, with the planned facility set to produce 450 metric tons per day (m.t./d) of e-methanol in various grades. These products will cater to the maritime and e-gasoline fuel markets.

Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, stated: “We are proud that our technology and implementation know-how will contribute to this pioneering project by Koppö Energia Oy. This is an excellent proof point for cross-industrial cooperation in the establishment of green methanol as a fuel.”

Unlike grey methanol, which is typically produced from natural gas, green methanol (also known as e-methanol) is produced by directly hydrogenating CO2. Using thyssenkrupp’s green methanol production technology and renewable hydrogen generated from green electricity and water, the resulting e-methanol has a significantly lower carbon footprint. The green hydrogen required will be produced by a 200 MW water electrolysis plant. CO2 will be captured from a waste incineration facility in Vaasa, Finland, then liquefied and transported by truck to the P2X facilities.

Thomas Zirngibl, Director at Koppö Energia, expressed: “We are very pleased to cooperate with thyssenkrupp Uhde on this project as they bring the right technologies as well as the integration skills for ensuring a smooth tie-in and project delivery.”

The technology offered by thyssenkrupp Uhde enhances the project's efficiency by achieving high carbon and hydrogen efficiencies. This increases the feasibility of the project and its revenue potential. The company’s patented process scheme results in a very low amount of purge gas, which in turn reduces the carbon intensity of the production facility.

This collaboration between Koppö Energia and thyssenkrupp Uhde represents a significant step forward in the development of green methanol production and its role in decarbonizing fuel markets, particularly for maritime and e-gasoline sectors.
