The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation is overseeing the development of Indore’s 32km Yellow Line, which will feature 28 stations to serve the city’s population of about 2 million. The majority of the line will be elevated, but HCC and Tata Projects have been tasked with building the line’s only underground segment. This 8.65km section includes seven stations, connecting Indore’s international airport to the city’s main railway station. The joint venture will construct a total of 11.32km of tunneling, including extensions beyond the airport and railway station.
The project is a key part of Indore’s efforts to enhance urban mobility and support sustainable transportation for its growing population. The underground section is critical to ensuring efficient connectivity between major transport hubs, facilitating smoother travel for residents and visitors.
HCC brings relevant experience to the project, as it is also involved in other metro developments across India. The company is currently constructing 4km of twin tunnels and four stations for Mumbai Metro’s Line III, in addition to working on two packages for the Chennai Metro. This expertise strengthens the joint venture’s capacity to deliver the Indore project effectively.
The contract awarded to HCC and Tata Projects underscores their role in advancing India’s urban infrastructure. By developing this underground metro section, the joint venture will contribute to improved public transportation, reduced traffic congestion, and enhanced economic activity in Indore. The project aligns with broader efforts to modernize transportation networks in Madhya Pradesh, supporting the state’s vision for sustainable urban development.
