The Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, located in Shenzhen, South China, has achieved a significant milestone by generating over 1 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity for the grid since its commissioning in 1994. Operated by China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN), the facility has made substantial contributions to sustainable energy production.

CGN reports that the plant’s cumulative output has reduced the need for over 300 million tonnes of standard coal. This has led to a reduction of more than 820 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the environmental benefit of afforesting approximately 2.25 million hectares of land. These achievements highlight the plant’s role in supporting cleaner energy solutions.

Commissioned in 1994, Daya Bay was China’s first large-scale commercial nuclear power plant and remains one of the world’s largest clusters of pressurized water reactors, with a total installed capacity exceeding 6 gigawatts. The facility has been a cornerstone of reliable energy supply in the region, contributing to both economic growth and environmental goals.

He Liuyi, general manager of Daya Bay Nuclear Power Operations and Management Co., Ltd., said: “We have implemented nearly 200 technical upgrades and over 50 innovations, significantly enhancing the reactors’ nuclear safety, digitalisation and reliability.” These improvements have strengthened the plant’s operational efficiency and safety standards, ensuring consistent performance over its three decades of operation.

The plant’s success is driven by ongoing efforts to modernize its systems. Upgrades have focused on enhancing nuclear safety, adopting digital technologies, and improving equipment reliability. These advancements have enabled Daya Bay to maintain its position as a leader in nuclear energy production while meeting stringent safety and environmental requirements.

By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, Daya Bay has played a key role in promoting sustainable energy practices. Its substantial reduction in carbon emissions supports broader efforts to address climate change, while its energy output powers homes and industries across South China. The plant’s environmental impact, equivalent to vast afforestation, underscores its contribution to ecological preservation.

The milestone of 1 trillion kilowatt-hours reflects Daya Bay’s enduring commitment to clean energy and operational excellence. As a pioneer in China’s nuclear energy sector, the plant continues to set benchmarks for innovation and sustainability, supporting the region’s energy needs while advancing environmental objectives.
