The ferry is equipped with over 250 tonnes of batteries and an energy storage system with more than 40 megawatt-hours of capacity, supplied by Finnish technology company Wärtsilä. Connected to eight electric-driven waterjets, the system supports the vessel’s operation. Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine and Executive Vice President at Wärtsilä Corporation, stated: “We are proud to have collaborated with Incat and Buquebus in launching the world’s largest battery-electric ship. Ferries play a vital role in meeting the growing demand for environmentally sustainable transport options, with ship electrification a key solution for enabling the sector to transition towards net-zero emissions.”
The vessel’s technology is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 37,545 tonnes and minimize other harmful pollutants. Following the launch, work continues on the catamaran’s interior, with final fit-out, battery installation, and energy system integration underway. Sea trials are scheduled for later this year on the River Derwent, with delivery to Buquebus planned by the end of 2025.
Originally designed to operate on a clean fuel source, the ferry was re-engineered to run entirely on battery-electric power to enhance sustainability. Incat Chairman Robert Clifford emphasized the company’s focus on electric and hybrid ferries to meet Australia’s growing demand for sustainable maritime transport and support the industry’s shift toward decarbonization.
In May 2024, Incat Tasmania partnered with Wärtsilä and French ferry operator Brittany Ferries to develop a 137-meter zero-emissions craft. Brittany Ferries CEO Christophe Mathieu described the collaboration as: “an important step on the way to net zero.” This initiative reflects Incat’s broader commitment to advancing eco-friendly ferry designs globally.
The China Zorrilla represents a significant advancement in sustainable maritime transport, combining large-scale battery-electric technology with efficient design to serve Buquebus’ operations while contributing to environmental goals in the ferry industry.
